Pierwszy album Dream Theater ukazał się w końcu lat osiemdziesiątych, a więc w czasach niezbyt sprzyjających ambitnemu metalowi. Nawet najwięksi komercjalizowali swoje brzmienie. Wszechobecna MTV również nie była dobrze nastawiona do takiej muzyki. W dodatku piątka muzyków z Nowego Jorku spróbowała zrobić coś innego od tego, co wydawało się najbardziej...

Debiut zespołu Dream Theater to pozycja z wszech miar dziwna. Na początek należy zaznaczyć, iż jest to ich jedyne dzieło nagrane bez niesamowitego Jamesa Labriego przy mikrofonie.
