Islands to płyta, która wzbudza wśród fanów King Crimson najwięcej kontrowersji. Dla niektórych zachwycająca, innym wydaje się świadectwem głębokiego kryzysu. Ten concept album, w warstwie tekstowej zdecydowanie spójny, opowiadający bowiem o poszukiwaniu miłości i różnych jej odcieniach, w warstwie muzycznej był wyjątkowo zróżnicowany i niejednorodny....

„Wiedziałem, że czeka mnie dwuletni okres przejściowy…” Tak Robert Fripp komentował sytuację King Crimson w połowie roku 1970. Resztki składu z genialnej płyty debiutanckiej już się całkowicie rozsypały – odeszli bracia Gilesowie, odszedł McDonald, a Lake zaczął działalność w nowej formacji HELP (a raczej HEL&P). Jedynie wierny Sinfield trwał u boku...
