Wkład The Roots w rozwój hip hopu jest nie do przecenienia. Zresztą otwartym pozostaje pytanie czy mamy do czynienia jeszcze z zespołem hiphopowym, czy może progresywnym soulowo-funkowym bandem, bowiem słyną z tego, że niemal wszystkie partie wykonują na żywych instrumentach.
