The Danse Society powstali w 1981 roku w angielskim Barnsley na gruzach formacji The Danse Crazy. Po wielu udanych koncertach - m.in. u boku takich sław, jak Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire czy Soft Cell - wytwórnie płytowe rozpoczęły walkę o kontrakt z tym obiecującym zespołem.
