W roku 1978 Pink Floyd znalazł się w impasie. Spory personalne, poczucie niepewności co do przetrwania w apogeum punkowej rewolucji, ogólne zmęczenie... Czterech muzyków zaczęło pracę nad własnymi projektami. Nick Mason zmówił się z awangardową pianistką jazzową, Carlą Bley, a efekty tej współpracy można było poznać na wydanym w 1981 albumie. Po wydaniu w 1977 roku albumu "Animals" nastroje muzyków Pink Floyd nie były zbyt optymistyczne, co było wynikiem coraz bardziej egoistycznego podejścia Watersa do pracy w zespole. Zarówno Wright jak i Gilmour mieli głowy pełne ciekawych pomysłów, które jednak nie trafiały w perfekcyjne aż do bólu gusta Watersa. Dlatego obaj muzycy postanowili niezależnie...
